While much of the conversation around artificial intelligence focuses on job disruption, misinformation, and risk, there are areas where the technology is delivering clear and deeply human value. One of the most overlooked applications of AI today is helping reunite lost pets with their owners—turning what was once a matter of luck into a data-driven process.

For decades, pet recovery has relied on posters, word of mouth, and microchips. But these methods often fall short, especially when animals travel far from home or are never scanned. Now, AI is changing that. Platforms like Petco Love Lost use image recognition to match photos of missing pets with animals found in shelters or reported online, analyzing details such as facial structure, fur patterns, and unique physical traits.

The impact is already significant. Since launching in 2021, Petco Love Lost has helped reunite more than 200,000 pets with their owners, scanning images across thousands of shelters and online sources. In cases where pets are unrecognizable due to weight loss, dirt, or time on the streets, AI can still identify subtle features that humans might miss—dramatically increasing the chances of a successful match.

Juliette Gonzalez turned to Petco Love’s AI after her blind pit bull mix, Sandy, ran off during a thunderstorm, uploading a photo in hopes of finding her. Weeks later, the system matched Sandy to a dog at a nearby rescue—despite her being thinner and unrecognizable to most, Gonzalez immediately identified her by the lines on her tongue. “I was just so excited,” she said. “I felt shaky — very shaky. I couldn’t believe it.”

What makes this particularly powerful is accessibility. Pet owners simply upload a photo, and the system continuously scans for matches across a vast network. In many cases, reunions that might have taken weeks—or never happened at all—are now occurring within hours or days. For shelters, which are often overwhelmed and under-resourced, AI is also becoming a critical tool to identify animals and reconnect them with families more efficiently.

At a time when AI is often viewed with skepticism, this use case highlights a different narrative—one where technology augments human connection rather than replacing it. As one animal welfare leader noted, AI in this context is “a real win” and has the potential to transform how lost pets are found. It’s a reminder that while AI may disrupt industries, it can also quietly solve everyday problems in ways that feel almost like miracles.
